It is important to know two types of fires before we dig deeper into the fire and smoke alarms.
One is a fire with flames. It is visibly there and gets people to react as a natural reaction. Another one is a fire without flames. It is called smoldering fire. It can burn for days without being noticed or without being reacted upon.
Now as much as it may seem like fire and smoke alarms are one thing; they actually are not.
The most common fire alarms used are called ionization fire alarms. These alarms are very fast to react when there is fire with the fast moving heavy flames. They don’t react as fast when only smoke is present. In some controlled testing atmospheres, ionization fire alarms detect and react 30-90 seconds faster in fast flame fires as compared to smoldering fires and ionization fire/smoke alarms.
The alarms that are good for smoldering fires are called photoelectric fire / smoke alarms. These alarms react faster for the fires when there are no flames, and only smoke might be present. In controlled testing environments, photoelectric smoke/fire alarms detect and react 20-50 minutes faster in smoldering fires as compared to common ionization fire alarms.

Carbon Monoxide is a gas and is a byproduct of an incomplete combustion process.
